DOYEON KIM

Born in South Korea, raised in Bali and now living in London, I am a visual communicator exploring identity and the mundane of everyday life. My work is greatly influenced by emotions and insights gathered from navigating three distinct cultures, inspiring me to highlight underrepresented stories through visual storytelling.

My creative process thrives on hands-on experimentation, bringing ideas to life across various mediums and collaborative endeavours.
By blending multicultural influences with a strong narrative focus, I strive to create visually engaging designs that resonate on both personal and collective narratives.

Yoga and pottery are my go-to practices in my free time, and I’m always open to a matcha chat — whether it’s about opportunities, commissions, or simply sharing ideas with like-minded creatives!

Paper Stories

Wandering through new places, I collect pieces of the world—ephemeral visuals, remnants of moments, pieces of stories left behind. Collecting has always felt natural, a quiet way of holding onto what slips away. I turn these scraps into collage, not just as creation, but as a way of journaling—tracing memories through paper, ink, and time. This series, beginning at the end of 2024, is made from the remnants of my travels—newspapers, pamphlets, receipts, posters, recycled scraps, tickets—each carrying the mark of where I’ve been, each a story retold.

(Un)Seen Beauty

(Un)Seen Beauty introduces six different people photographed and interviewed on their scars and stories. Self-inflicted and accident scars direct us through a collection of experiences which are both extraordinary and banal. Each book contains one story and is displayed on a human-size board reflecting the placement of the scar.

The Tool House

In this project, I am focusing on the idea of a connection between humans and tools. How the tools we create, make an impact on what we create–like a never-ending cycle.

The dissertation aims to explore the connection between Humans and tools within the field of archaeology of design– focusing on the idea of how a specific tool is designed and chosen by us (by intention or not) makes an impact on us and eventually how tools surrounding us is a reflection of us.

The Tool House project consists of three parts: a Tool House (wooden house), a Human and Tool (a physical book) and a post- er. The Tool House shows the collection of tools I used in creating the book. The tools that impacted in creating of my dissertation, directly and indirectly. The poster lists all the tools used. The ‘book’ is my written dissertation as a form of tool–in this case, a book.

Wunderkammer

After moving to London during pandemic, I collected bits and bobs that caught my eyes for the six months. From artworks in the gallery to random gems captured on the street, I collected over 65 different kinds of things.

Throughout this journey of collecting—and while navigating the mixed feelings of missing my dog back home—I became curious about how my dog sees the world and wanted to share this collection with him. I aimed to create an experience that allowed me to see through the eyes of a dog. Eighteen selected interests are curated for the publication and printed in only colours that a dog can see (Blue, Yellow and Black).
